Magnitude by Victor Jimenez is a speculative science fiction novel.
I think. I’m not good at genres.
I was drawn in from the beginning by the intriguing concept. Strange stars that show up in the night sky and forming a set of watching eyes? Count me in. As the story unfolded I felt swept up much like the main character. Caught up in something I knew little about (though Victor knows his stuff, evidently). I enjoyed my time while the main character = not so much.
Jimenez clearly knows his science and it shows throughout the book without feeling like a slog through a textbook. The human component of this grounded SciFi story is what hooked me. I think that’s what really shines here. The characters and their universal struggles of being human. The relatability pulls the story close where it would’ve been in danger of feeling distant.
If you enjoy speculative SciFi in the vein of The Three Body Problem, you’ll enjoy this.
