THIS. IS. REVIEWSTACK
This time around the bend is Patricia J.L. 👻🧶🖊️’s novel “Leaves of Fall”, an excellent YA type story about trees, which I will not be making any puns based on.
This book grew on me.
I was mildly concerned there would be hand-holding due to the first reveal/twist being perhaps too telegraphed but I am very pleased to say I enjoyed this book a lot. I wasn’t sure if this would be a YA book or a romance or something else, but I dove in and found a little bit of everything. There was a dystopian setting fit for any YA novel. I was reminded heavily of the visuals for The Last of Us. Everything was broken down and reclaimed by nature — overgrown.
The characters are very well written and consistent, and there was a subtle romance that I found perfectly fitting for the story. Something I find frustrating in this type of book is the lack of impact or effect that traumatic experiences have on characters – but I felt this book did a good job at showing the trauma and the long branching effects, not just the immediate ones. This story isn’t overly complicated, and it is pulled off well. Its got roots – heh – in struggles common to all people in all times: trust, hatred, discrimination, love, greed.
Lemme plant an idea in your mind. Let the thought germinate, allow the seed to blossom and flower into an action. Heh. Go pluck this one off the shelf and leaf through it, you’ll like it. Or maybe you don’t like good books and supporting indie authors, maybe I’m barking up the wrong tree. Okay I’m done.
