Behind Every Door Challenge #3

March 31 – April 13

In 2025, Microzine will share various door prompts, and itโ€™s up to you to decide what (or who) is behind them. Perhaps a beast waiting for you? A family having a squabble? Lovers taking advantage of being alone? A knight suiting up for his next battle? An old woman waiting for a visitโ€ฆfrom youโ€ฆ? A room of missing treasure finally discovered?

    The Invader, 6

MY broom cupboard smelled smoky today.

  2. Richbee

Other side stairs are broken down.

    [ A Room With No View, 50 ]
The landlady shows me to the tiny room where Iโ€™m to live in this urban wilderness of Barcelona. Itโ€™s painted entirely in a deep, thunderous red. It has no windows, and seems to be furnished primarily with cats. โ€œExcuse me,โ€ I venture, โ€œis it too late to cancel?

    The Basement Exit (6)

The basement exit only went down.

    A Romantic Interlude (25)

They tried their best to make a stairwell work. The angles, the discomfort, the fear of falling made it impossible to keep a romantic mood.

    The Stairwell (50)

โ€œWhat was keeping her?โ€ wondered Damien. It was only two flights of stairs. โ€œSurely she wouldnโ€™t get lost.โ€

He made up his mind to follow her footsteps. He pushed open the door stepping to the stairs. He spotted something on the next landing.

โ€œMerideth,โ€ was the last word he said.

    The New Office (100)

Being banished to the stairwell was the ultimate punishment at the law firm McCoy, McCoy, McCoy and Real. No desk, no phone, an ancient Microsoft computer was all he had.

โ€œMr. Dunkenfield?โ€ asked a head in the door opening.

    โ€œYes.โ€

    โ€œA customer.โ€

โ€˜You a lawyer?โ€ his new customer asked as he pushed his way into the room.

    โ€œYes.โ€

    โ€œDonโ€™t need one. Are you a barrister?โ€

    Yes.โ€

    โ€œDonโ€™t need oneโ€

    โ€œWhat do you need?โ€

    โ€œA therapist.โ€

โ€œA therapist? Why do you need one?

โ€œThis isnโ€™t practicing law. Itโ€™s embarrassing. You need a therapist. Thatโ€™s me. Letโ€™s get you out of here.โ€

    The Right Floor (150)

He huffed as he opened the door. He panted his way to the office in the corner. Having climbed 40 sets of stairs to deliver his boss’s note was not enjoyable but it had to be done. The elevator was out of service.

โ€œWho are you?โ€ asked a pert young woman from the doorway

“Iโ€™m Davy Jones,โ€ he replied. โ€œMy boss sent me with a note for Alex Wheedlewacker.โ€

She looked amused. โ€œWell that is interesting. You climbed 40 sets of stairs to deliver the note?

    โ€œYes.โ€

    โ€œMr. Wheedlewacker works on the 3rd floor.โ€

โ€œI came all this way for nothing?โ€ Davy Jones huffed.

โ€œYou wonโ€™t walk away empty handed,โ€ Audrey said as she picked up a pen and jotted a note.

He started towards the door when she handed him the card. โ€œWhatโ€™s this?โ€ he asked.

    โ€œGive me a call,โ€ she smiled. โ€œYour efforts have been given a date.โ€
