Annihilator by Simpulacra

Top of the mornin to ya. Bottom of the ninth to ya.

Back at ya with another Substack book review, here it come.

I do not smoke. I’ve actually never smoked. When I finished Annihilator by Simpulacra, I felt the need to light up.

I think a good measure of art that I literally just made up right now is if it can move your emotional barometer, ideally in the direction it’s trying to move it. This book made me feel quite a lot. There were days (warning: not an exaggeration) where I had to put off reading a chapter for a little because I knew it would hit hard. This book was sort of like being in a rage room, except I was the thing everyone was beating the shit out of. That to me is a very impressive feat for a writer to accomplish.

But of course, it’s not just a heavy story. It’s also unique. The main character is seeing spider webs stemming from her head to connect her to people and things. I won’t say more, but I mean — c’mon, doesn’t that just tickle your fancy? The characters are also written very well, feeling real and fleshed out. Each one reacts in natural ways that really bring you into the story, even when you hope they react differently — perhaps especially then.

Also closing note — totally Wizard cover art on this one.
